We stock Genie-compatible cable and drum replacement parts on our trucks and typically complete the full swap in one visit. Installed replacement for a Genie cable and drum assembly in Las Vegas runs $130 – $250, and we quote that price in writing before any work starts. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: the door jerks on the way up, one side sits visibly lower than the other, or you hear a snap and find a frayed cable dangling from the track.
The cable is the steel braided line that runs alongside your door and does the lifting. The drum is the grooved spool at the top corner that winds and unwinds that cable. When either one fails on a Genie door, the door won’t lift straight, and running it any further only chews up more parts.
Which Genie Models This Applies To
Genie residential doors break into two rough families when it comes to cables and drums: the IntelliG series (1000, 1200, 2200) and the ReliaG series (600, 800, 1200). The drums differ between them, and here’s the gotcha most homeowners hit: the drum for an IntelliG 1200 is not interchangeable with a ReliaG 1200. They share a model number suffix but use different cable drum profiles. We match by the part number stamped on the back of the drum, not by the door model name, because Genie changed suppliers on several model lines between 2015 and 2019.
For OEM versus aftermarket: Genie’s factory cables are cut to a specific length for each door height, and a quality aftermarket equivalent from a reputable manufacturer holds up fine in Las Vegas as long as it’s the correct gauge. We stock both. If you want factory Genie parts, we’ll quote it that way. If you want the same build quality at a lower price, we’ll tell you what the aftermarket option is and let you decide. Companies that won’t show you both are usually deciding for you.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Frayed or unraveling cable strands. This is the most common early warning. Genie cables take a beating in Las Vegas because garage-door hardware doesn’t love fine desert dust, and grit works its way between cable strands over hundreds of cycles. A frayed cable hasn’t failed yet, but it will.
- Door jerks or hesitates on one side. When a cable stretches or the drum teeth wear unevenly, one side of the door travels faster than the other. The door will hang crooked or bounce mid-travel. Continued use bends the lower brackets and chews the track.
- Loud popping or snapping sound from the corner of the door. That’s the cable letting go, often taking the drum seat with it. One side of the door will drop suddenly. If this happens, do not try to open the door again.
- Visible slack in the cable when the door is down. A healthy cable sits taut against the drum. If you can wiggle it, the drum has lost its grip on the cable, and the cable will slip completely off on the next cycle.
- Door stalls mid-open or slams shut faster than normal. Both are signs the cables and drums are no longer managing the torsion spring’s energy the way Genie engineered them to. The opener will strain, and the problem accelerates.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Genie cable and drum replacement in Las Vegas, the installed price range is $130 – $250. That includes the parts, the labor, and a written price handed to you before we touch anything. Here’s how the range breaks down:
- Single cable replacement: $130 – $180
- Single cable plus drum: $160 – $220
- Both cables and both drums: $190 – $250
The spread depends on whether we’re replacing one side or both, whether your drums are OEM Genie or a quality aftermarket equivalent, and how much the current failure fouled the surrounding hardware. A cable that snapped under load often takes the bottom bracket with it, and we’ll show you that damage before we quote the additional line item. Every replacement we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible fraying on the cable, check for slack when the door is closed, and confirm the door hangs level. That’s diagnosis, and it helps you tell us exactly what you’re seeing. The repair itself is a different story. Genie doors run a torsion spring system, and the cables and drums are under that spring’s tension. When a cable snaps, it releases stored energy with enough force to seriously injure a person. This isn’t a job where you loosen a few bolts and swap a part. It requires winding bars, the correct procedure, and a healthy respect for what a torsion spring will do to your hand if you lose your grip.
We’d rather you call us. Aaron Teague still walks difficult jobs himself, and he’ll tell you exactly what failed and what it costs before the work begins. Call (725) 224-5155 if you’re looking at a frayed cable or a crooked door, and we’ll get someone out to you.
FAQs
In Las Vegas, expect 7 to 10 years out of a Genie cable and drum set. The dry heat and dust shorten the lifespan compared to coastal climates, where the same parts can run 10 to 12 years. If your door cycles more than four times a day, plan for the shorter end of that range. Call (725) 224-5155 if you’re unsure whether yours are due for a look.
No. A frayed cable cannot be safely patched or re-wrapped. The strength is in the continuous braided run, and a fray means that run is compromised. We replace the cable, and if the drum shows wear, we replace that at the same time rather than asking you to pay for a second visit later.
Most single-side replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site. A full both-sides job with new drums runs up to two hours. We carry Genie-compatible cables and drums on our trucks, so in most cases we complete the repair on the first visit. Call (725) 224-5155 for a free estimate on your specific door.
Yes. We stock Genie IntelliG and ReliaG cables and drums alongside parts for LiftMaster and Chamberlain doors. If your drum has an unusual part number we don’t carry, we’ll have it sourced and back within 48 hours, and you’ll know that before we schedule the return visit.
No. The price we quote is the price you pay, written down before work starts. If we find additional damage that wasn’t visible on the initial quote, we show you the damage, explain the added line item, and get your sign-off before proceeding. No surprises at the end. Call (725) 224-5155 and we’ll walk you through the quote process.
